Prohibited Practices

behaviour management

All staff and students at Top of the Ridge Day Care must read and agree in writing to the behaviour management policy prior to commencing work and annually, thereafter. 


The behaviour management policy is reviewed annually and revised when necessary. Parents will be consulted on revisions, and informed of any changes before they are implemented. 

Prohibited practices

Staff and Students at Top of the Ridge Day Care will:


  • Not use corporal punishment to discipline a child (including hitting, slapping, spanking, pinching, pushing, shaking, dropping, biting or grabbing).
  • Not permit physical restraint of the child, such as confining the child to a high chair, car seat, stroller  or other device for the purposes of discipline or in lieu of supervision, unless the physical  restraint is for the purpose of preventing a child from hurting himself, herself or someone else,  and is used only as a last resort and only until the risk of injury is no longer imminent
  • Not use harsh or degrading measures or threats or use of derogatory language directed at or used in the presence of a child that would humiliate, shame or frighten, or undermine the child's self-respect, nor verbally tease or taunt the child. 
  • Not deprive the child of basic needs such as food and/or drink, shelter, sleep, use of the toilet, clothing or bedding. 
  • Not punish or reprimand a child for failing to use the toilet. 
  • Not punish or reprimand a child for failing to fall asleep at rest time. 
  • Not punish or reprimand a child for refusing to eat or drink. 
  • Not lock, or permit to be locked for the purpose of containing a child: 

                    a.  The rooms or exits which are used by the children during hours of operation in the licensed                 

                          child care center.

                    b.  A structure or locked or lockable room to confine a child who has been withdrawn from the 

                          other children.

*unless such confinement occurs during an  emergency and is required as part of the licensee’s emergency management policies and  procedures
